“So help me, if you say one word, I’ll leave you here to drown in the gutter,” he snarled, yanking the passenger door open. By now his clothing was soaked through and he was regretting the impulse that brought him out of his apartment.
She took another step back. “You’ve been drinking. I don’t ride with people under the influence.”
Not completely stupid, after all. At another time he might comment on the wisdom of that, but just then a gust of icy wind barreled down the road and drenched him cold stone sober.
“Fine.” He slammed the passenger door shut. “Suit yourself.”
Rounding the front of the truck, he got in and grimaced when his clothes squished as he settled into the driver’s seat. Seeing her dripping on the side of the road didn’t even make him feel better. In fact, it spiked his temper to almost volcanic levels.
He rolled the window down again and called out, “Last chance.”
In reply, she started walking up the hill away from him.
He threw the truck into drive and followed her.
At the top of the hill, she stopped. He shifted into park. She opened the truck door and asked,” How much do you weigh?”
“What?”
“How much do you weigh, and how many beers have you had?”
“One eighty, and four cans. No, three and a half, since you made me spill most of one.” Technically, the fourth one was barely touched, sitting opened next to his gaming chair where he left it to come check on her.
Irritated all over again, he barked, “Are you getting in or not?”
She scrunched up her face, bit her lip, then with a pained look on her face, climbed into the cab. “Thank you.”
“Not. One. Word.”
